Parallel Realities and the Structure of Existence

The idea that we exist within infinite parallel realities - shifting between them constantly, accessing different timelines, experiencing reality as something fluid rather than fixed - has moved well into mainstream consciousness.

Part 1: What Is the Bootstrap Paradox?

Physics has a specific name for one of the stranger implications of parallel reality theory: the bootstrap paradox. The principle behind it is taken seriously enough that a major international research collaboration across MIT, Princeton, Caltech, and Harvard is built around it.

The classic thought experiment goes like this.

A person receives a set of plans from their future self.  Plans to build a time machine.  They use those blueprints to build a time machine.  Later in their life, they travel back in time - to meet their past self.  Here they give the same plans they were given - to build the time machine.

It's a paradox. Who created the plans for the time machine in the first place?

Nobody. The plans exist in a loop - passed from future to past to future, eternally. They were never designed by anyone.

There is no origin point.

They simply exist, self-referentially, outside of causality entirely.

This is classified as a paradox not because it creates a contradiction, but because it reveals something that sits uncomfortably outside our usual ideas of reality: Information with no origin.

NOTE: Physicists Igor Novikov and Andrei Lossev, studying causal loops in general relativity, gave a name to the self-consistent sequences of events they found that had no traceable origin point. They called them Jinn - the Arabic word for beings that exist in a parallel dimension alongside our own.

Part 2: How This Differs from the Grandfather Paradox

The bootstrap paradox is often confused with a different puzzle, and the distinction matters.

In the Grandfather Paradox, another thought experiment - time traveller goes back and kills their grandfather. This prevents their own parent being born and therefore the time traveller. Therefore they couldn't have gone back to kill their grandfather in the first place.

This is a structural paradox - a loop that destroys its own coherence entirely.

The bootstrap paradox's loop is entirely self-consistent. The plans work. The device functions. Everything holds together perfectly. The only thing absent is an origin point.

This is why physicists classify it differently - as a possibility that destabilises our assumption that everything must have a beginning. The grandfather paradox is a logical impossibility. The bootstrap paradox is a logical possibility that opens a quietly radical question: what if some things simply exist, without ever having been created?

This has been popularised in the recent Netflix series Dark, amongst many other media avenues. It may be a fascinating thought experiment - or it may reveal something incredibly profound....

Part 3: Usui and Mount Kurama

Now consider a very different kind of story.

Mikao Usui is the founder of Reiki. His process of discovering it involves climbing Mount Kurama in a state of profound initiation - fasting, seeking, genuinely not knowing.  He isn't attempting to build anything. He has no blueprint, no ambition to found a healing system. He arrives at the mountain to embark upon an initiation (a 21 day fast and deep meditation process).

And then something arrives in him, complete and fully formed - what we now call Reiki.

The current understanding is that Usui created Reiki in that moment. Or it was downloaded or channeled to him in that moment. That he is its origin point, its inventor, its founder.

This makes sense in linear reality.

The bootstrap paradox suggests a different reading.

What if Reiki already exists - in a parallel reality - and what happened on that mountain was self-entanglement rather than creation?

In an infinite universe, there would be many timelines where Reiki has already been discovered, already practised, already understood. A soul (consciousness) initiated enough to become genuinely open - self entangles with another version of themselves who already carries it. We will refer to this throughout as timeline self-entanglement.

In this setting, Reiki has no origin point. It exists across the infinite structure of reality, accessible to any version of Usui - or anyone else - who becomes initiated enough to reach it. It is constantly "birthed" in new timelines due to self-entanglement.

Yet the point here is there is no origin point for Reiki. It simply exists. And it matches a rather mystical understanding of reality (see upcoming framework

And this is where it becomes truly radical. Anyone who reaches the same threshold of openness can access the same thing. The breakthrough does not belong to any single person. It belongs to everyone whose initiation brings them to the same door.

This is what democratises all breakthroughs, all ideas, all healing. It requires initiation - the genuine openness that allows self-entanglement to occur.

There are deep resonances with this in spiritual traditions, particularly the concept of the Akashic Records - we will come to that.

Part 4: Self-Entanglement: From Personal Downloads to Collective Discovery

This offers a way to understand what many people describe as "downloads" - those moments when an idea, a breakthrough, a piece of music, or an entire body of knowledge arrives fully formed, as if received rather than constructed.

The spiritual community uses language such as channelling, receiving, downloading from Source. The creative world calls it inspiration, the muse, the zone. Scientists describe it as the eureka moment - the flash of insight that arrives complete.

What if the concepts each person receives - upgraded, new, evolved - arrives through quantum entanglement with another version of themselves?

What if all of these are describing the same event from different angles?

A consciousness, through whatever combination of initiation, openness, and readiness, entangling with a version of itself that already carries what is arriving. The download is coming from a parallel timeline of the person receiving it - a version who already has what is now landing.

This changes the relationship to the experience without diminishing it. The download is real. The meeting is real. What shifts is the assumed direction of travel.

Rather than arriving from outside it is arriving from across and within - from a timeline that already exists, self-entangled by a consciousness that became available to it.

It is even different from standard timeline shifting theory.

Rather than arriving from outside, it is arriving from across and within - from a timeline that already exists, self-entangled by a consciousness that became available to it.

It is even different from standard timeline shifting theory. Rather than shifting to a parallel timeline where one has what is sought - which is still seeking energy - here, the attunement is to the version that already carries it. The shift happens in this timeline through the entanglement, not by moving to another one.

This agrees with a deeper metaphysical concept of consciousness not needing to move anywhere - it simply exists, perceiving through its lens.

Part 5: Scientific Discoveries & Breakthroughs ofd Ideas

Darwin went through decades of patient, rigorous observation - a sustained initiation - until he entangled with the version of himself who already understood what we now call natural selection.
And here is a detail that has baffled many: Alfred Russel Wallace arrived at exactly the same theory, independently, at almost exactly the same moment, on the other side of the world.

This has been explained in many waysm from collective evolution to the Akasha (explored in framework 2)

With bootstrap theory:

These weren't multiple people thinking the same thought at the same time - they may have been converging from different timelines into this one, each carrying what already existed elsewhere.

Newton and Leibniz arriving at the creation of Calculus independently.

Multiple inventors converging on creating the Telephone within weeks of each other.

The pattern repeats across centuries, and the standard explanation - shared cultural conditions - begins to feel insufficient when the timing is this precise and the people involved have had no contact with each other.

Every healing modality, every philosophical framework, every scientific breakthrough, every piece of music - perhaps none of these were created. They arrived in this timeline through self-entanglement, a process that can unfold over days, decades, or lifetimes. What we call ‘invention’ may be the moment that process completes, not its beginning.

Framework 2 explores what that convergence looks like - and why what appears as simultaneous discovery may be multiple timelines merging into one.

Part 6: Implications for Manifestation and Timeline Shifting

If this holds - if the bootstrap paradox describes the actual structure of discovery, invention, and inspiration rather than just a time travel curiosity - then what we are reaching for already exists.

The orientation shifts from building towards something to attuning. From creating to self-entangling. From asking “how do I make this happen?” to “how do I become available to what is already (t)here?”

This may explain what we call quantum leaps in healing but have never really understood.

This is a different orientation entirely, and it changes what the work actually is.

Framework 2 - Bootstrap Mechanics - maps what that entanglement process looks like in detail: how it works, what it feels like, and why some attempts complete while others don't. Framework 3 - Conscious Entanglement - explores what this means practically, in an ordinary life.

This framework is the foundation. Everything that follows rests on one recognition: there is no origin point. There is only meeting.

What We're Exploring

  • If forms and information can exist without origin points, what is the nature of that existence? Where do they exist, and in what sense?

  • Is the simultaneous independent discovery pattern - Darwin and Wallace, Newton and Leibniz arriving at calculus independently, multiple inventors converging on the telephone within weeks of each other - evidence of shared entanglement with pre-existing timeline, or adequately explained through shared cultural conditions?

  • What creates the conditions for self-entanglement? Usui used initiation and fasting. Darwin used decades of patient observation. What is the common mechanism beneath these different paths?

  • Is the universe genuinely already full of all possible timelines simultaneously, or is this a useful working metaphor for something we don't yet have precise language for?

Your Experience Matters

This is a working multidimensional theory. Source Institute publishes frameworks at this stage because transparency matters more than certainty. If this framework resonates with lived experience, or contradicts it, both responses are valuable.
